Practicalities

Visitors to Jamestown will find plenty of grocery stores, gas stations, and camp supplies with which to stock a trip to the Big South Fork or Pickett State Park, or for thrifting on the World’s Longest Yard Sale. TN-154 and TN-297 leading out of town toward the parks are littered with enterprises geared to outfitting hunters and hostlers.

SGT. ALVIN C. YORK STATE HISTORIC PARK

Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Park, established in 1968, is approximately 8.5 miles (13.7 km) north of Jamestown on US-127. Situated on the edge of the beautiful valley of the Wolf River, not far from Kentucky, it is a remembrance of the most decorated American military hero of World War I. The small town of Pall Mall includes the York home and farm, which he received as a gift from grateful Tennesseans when he returned here, as well as his store and gristmill. Nearby are York’s grave and the church where he served as Sunday school teacher, elder, and occasional preacher.

Alvin York was a poor, ill-educated farm boy when he left America to fight in World War I. He returned an international hero, after his courage and marksmanship led him and seven surviving members of his squad to kill 25 German soldiers and capture 132 prisoners in a single engagement on October 18, 1918. York was feted by the Allied countries and their leaders, and offered wealth and fame when he returned to the United States. He chose instead to return to rural Tennessee, marry his childhood sweetheart, and live his life there, while seeking to improve the future for his remote community. York used his celebrity to obtain better roads and educational improvements for the Upper Cumberland Plateau. The Alvin York Institute was founded in 1929 and provided generations of mountain children with education and vocational opportunities. When York died in 1964, 7,000 people attended his funeral.

The bucolic Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Park (2609 North York Hwy., Pall Mall, 931/879-6456, https://tnstateparks.com, historic home walking tour $5 ages 13 and up, driving tour $10 ages 13 and up) is a fitting tribute to this most remarkable American war hero. The park includes the old York home, which is full of photographs and memorabilia reflecting on the famous soldier and his community. The old York gristmill is picturesque, and a picnic ground provides an excuse to linger.

The World’s Longest Yard Sale

In a place where “yard saling” is a bona fide pastime as well as a spectator sport, it should be no surprise that the world’s biggest, baddest, and longest yard sale makes its way through the Cumberland Plateau. Officially headquartered in Jamestown, the Highway 127 World’s Longest Yard Sale (931/879-9948, www.127sale.com) wends its way through 690 miles (1,110 km) from Michigan to Alabama, although the Tennessee and Kentucky sections are generally the busiest and best for bargain hunters.
